Gilbert House Fellowship #149: 2, 3 John; Revelation 1-3

The seven churches in Asia (modern-day Turkey)

NOW WE get to the prophetic stuff! The Book of Revelation was written by John, either in the mid-60s A.D. or around 95 A.D. Most scholars believe it was the later date, during the reign of Domitian, although some believe it was thirty years earlier, during the reign of Nero.

Either way, Revelation is a deep and fascinating prophecy given to John by Jesus himself. This week, we discuss the introduction to the book and the messages from Jesus to the seven churches of Asia. All seven are in modern-day Turkey, which may have significance for the last days. We briefly explain how the seven churches represent the ages of church history (see the chart below) and various heresies that had entered the church before the end of the first century A.D.

  1. I’m wondering about the “Nicolatitans” Rev 2:6… on Unraveling Revelation you bring them up… the Deacon or Bishop Nicholas… do you think any connection to St. Nick??? Jolly ‘ol St. Nick?

  2. Hi Derek and Sharon – My husband and I are REALLY enjoying the Revelation study – just wanted to add something about the making of purple: I have BA in art and art history and I did a paper on colors in the Bible – and I read (somewhere – probably google) that because the Romans had such an insatiable thirst for purple color, they would gather Murex mollusks from the Mediterranean scatter them on a beach and get slaves, old men and little children hand them iron rods and make them smash the Murex – many children and others became blind because of shell shards that hit their eyes. The Murex became almost extinct – The Roman Papacy used the colors to represent their hierarchy – Blue priests had higher authority than purple-cloth priests – It took longer for the Murex to change color to blue because the exposed mollusks had to sit in the sun longer!

  3. Great resource! Thank You!
Do you have a transcript or notes for the Revelation Study?

    1. Author

Hi, Kerry: Thank you! We’re afraid we don’t. We come in with some notes prepared but we don’t write out our studies in advance, and we just don’t have the time to transcribe them after the fact.

You might check our YouTube channel to get the automatically generated transcripts. They won’t be perfect, but that’s the best suggestion we can offer.

      1. WOW! I didn’t know utube did transcripts… I’ll check it out.
If I do find it usable. I’ll clean up any mis-translations and send you a copy. Perhaps others could use it. LORD Bless!
Thanks for all you both do! I so appreciate your 5n10 and Sci Fri.
Have you considered a paid subscription for more news/insights? You’re really a wealth of info and I would be willing to pay for some more than 5 in 10. I so like how you include good news!
        LORD Bless!

  4. Where can I find all the videos of Unraveling Revelation?
