Gilbert House Fellowship #182: Jer 38-40; Psalms 74, 79; 2 Kings 24-25

THE LAST king of Judah, Zedekiah, was obviously more afraid of his countrymen than he was of Nebuchadnezzar — or God, for that matter.

This week’s study covers the last couple years of the kingdom of Judah before Nebuchadnezzar lost patience and destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple altogether. Zedekiah appears to have been sympathetic to Jeremiah, but he was intimidated by nationalist Judeans into continuing their rebellion against Babylon against the warnings of God through His prophet, Jeremiah.

For reference, here is the timeline of the events we’ve been discussing in our last few studies:

  1. Good morning, Derek and Sharon,

I’ve been following your home study (rather sporadically, though) for about a year now, but I have couple of questions. Are you currently doing New Testament? I know you completed last year and spoke of doing video. Also, I would like to start following along with the reading, but can’t find Bible version you’re using.

Finally, I hope you have discovered that the 9th day of the 9th month on the Hebrew calendar is the 9th of Av. A day of mourning and fasting for the Jews as historically a lot of suffering has occurred on this date. It is part of the 21 days between 17th of Tammuz and 9th of Av known as the “dire straits.” Check it out.

    Love you, guys!!

Hi, Gina: Thank you for your kind words! We are not currently going through the New Testament, although we will again at some point. We plan to begin working through the Book of Enoch soon because of its impact on New Testament theology.

We use the English Standard Version (ESV). It is a good, modern word-for-word translation.
